How to Convert ChatGPT to Google Docs (and Keep the Formatting)
By the GPTs Exporter team · Updated
The quickest way to convert a ChatGPT conversation to Google Docs is with our free extension, ChatGPT to PDF: open the chat, click the down arrow next to the Save as PDF/WORD/MD/GD button and choose Google Docs. The chat is created as a Google Doc in your Drive, with code blocks, tables, images and maths already formatted. If you only need a paragraph or two, copy and paste works too, and the tips below fix the formatting problems it causes.
Method 1: Export ChatGPT to Google Docs in one click
- Install ChatGPT to PDF from the Chrome Web Store. It works in Chrome and in other browsers that install from the Chrome Web Store, such as Edge and Brave.
- Open chatgpt.com and go to the conversation you want in Google Docs.
- Click the down arrow on the right of the Save as PDF/WORD/MD/GD button and choose Google Docs.
- The first time, sign in with your Google account and allow access.
- The conversation opens as a new Google Doc in your Google Drive, ready to edit, comment on or share.
You can export the full chat, only ChatGPT's answers, or a question-and-answer layout, and add a table of contents for long conversations. The extension asks only for Google's drive.file permission, which covers the files it creates, not the rest of your Drive.
Using Firefox? The Firefox add-on exports to Word. Save the chat as a .docx, then in Google Drive choose New → File upload and open the file with Google Docs.
Method 2: Copy and paste ChatGPT text into Google Docs
For a short answer, copying is fine. Select the text in ChatGPT, or use the copy button under a response, and paste it into your document. A few tricks make the result cleaner:
- Paste without formatting (Ctrl+Shift+V, or Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac) when the pasted text keeps ChatGPT's fonts, colours or background. Then reapply headings with Google Docs' own styles.
- Paste from Markdown when the text arrives full of
**,#and|symbols. Turn on Tools → Preferences → Enable Markdown, then right-click in the document and choose Paste from Markdown. Headings, bold text, lists and simple tables are converted. - Put code in a code block with Insert → Building blocks → Code blocks so it keeps a monospace font.
- Insert images separately. Images in a chat are not copied with the text, so download each one and add it with Insert → Image.
Why ChatGPT formatting breaks in Google Docs
ChatGPT writes its answers in Markdown and draws them in your browser with its own styles. When you paste, Google Docs gets either that styled web page or the raw Markdown underneath it, and neither maps cleanly onto a document. That is why pasted chats end up with odd backgrounds, plain-text tables, equations shown as LaTeX code and missing images. The extension avoids the problem by building the Google Doc from the conversation itself.
| Content | Copy and paste | ChatGPT to PDF extension |
|---|---|---|
| Code blocks | Often lose their monospace font, indentation or background | Formatted as code, indentation kept |
| Tables | Sometimes arrive as plain text or Markdown pipes | Real Google Docs tables with headers |
| Maths (LaTeX) | Raw LaTeX or the equation repeated twice | Rendered equations |
| Images | Have to be downloaded and inserted one by one | In place, where they were in the chat |
| Long chats | Scroll, select and paste message by message | The whole conversation in one click |
Need Word or PDF instead?
The same button saves the conversation as a PDF, a Word (.docx) file or Markdown, and can send any of them straight to Google Drive. See how to export ChatGPT to Word and how to save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF.
Private by design
To build the document, the conversation is sent to our servers over HTTPS, used only for the conversion and deleted as soon as it is ready. We never store, log or review your conversations, and the Google Doc is saved to your own Drive.
Free and paid plans
Installing the extension gives you 2 free downloads straight away, then 2 free downloads every day. For unlimited exports, direct export to Google Drive and no branding, choose the Starter plan ($5 a month) or Pro plan ($36 a year).
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT export to Google Docs by itself?
No. ChatGPT has no Google Docs export, so you either copy and paste the text or use an extension such as ChatGPT to PDF, which creates the Google Doc for you.
How do I keep ChatGPT formatting when pasting into Google Docs?
Turn on Markdown in Google Docs (Tools → Preferences → Enable Markdown) and use Paste from Markdown, which converts headings, bold text, lists and simple tables. Code, maths and images still need fixing by hand; exporting with the extension keeps all of them.
Can I convert a whole ChatGPT conversation to one Google Doc?
Yes. The extension exports the entire conversation, however long, as a single Google Doc. You can also export only ChatGPT's answers or a question-and-answer layout.
Does it work with Claude or Gemini chats?
We make separate extensions for Claude and Gemini that export their conversations to PDF, Word and Markdown.
