How to Export ChatGPT Conversations to Word or Google Docs
By the GPTs Exporter team · Updated
The quickest way to export a ChatGPT conversation to Word or Google Docs is with our browser extension ChatGPT to PDF: open the chat, click the down arrow on the right of the Save as PDF/WORD/MD/GD button and choose Word or Google Docs. Code blocks, tables, images and LaTeX maths stay formatted, so you can edit the result instead of fixing it.
Why should you use our extension?
Pasting a chat into Word or Google Docs usually loses code formatting and table structure, and images have to be added one at a time. ChatGPT to PDF keeps them in place and gives every message a consistent layout, which matters most for long, technical conversations.
| Feature | What you get |
|---|---|
| Editable documents | Word (.docx) files that open in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice, and Google Docs ready to edit and share |
| Perfect formatting | Code blocks, tables, images and LaTeX maths stay formatted, so you edit the content instead of fixing it |
| Google Drive | Save exports straight to Drive, and import PDFs, images, Docs and Sheets from it |
| Choose what to export | The full chat, only ChatGPT's answers, or a question-and-answer layout |
| Make it yours | Custom title, font size, automatic table of contents and a text or image watermark |
| Long chats | Exports large conversations in one go. |
| Any language | Works with every language ChatGPT supports |
How to export ChatGPT to Word (.docx)
- Install ChatGPT to PDF from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons.
- Open chatgpt.com and go to the conversation you want to export.
- Click the down arrow on the right of the Save as PDF/WORD/MD/GD button the extension adds to the page.
- Choose Word.
- Download the .docx file and open it in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice or any editor that reads Word documents.
What the Word document keeps
- Code blocks, formatted as code with their indentation
- Tables, with rows, columns and headers intact
- Images, in the same place as in the chat
- LaTeX maths equations, rendered rather than shown as raw code
Customise your document
- Content view: export the full chat, only ChatGPT's answers, or a concise question-and-answer layout.
- Table of contents: generated automatically, so long conversations are easy to navigate.
- Title and fonts: give the document a custom title and adjust the font size.
How to export ChatGPT to Google Docs
- Install ChatGPT to PDF from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open chatgpt.com and go to the conversation you want to export.
- Click the down arrow on the right of the Save as PDF/WORD/MD/GD button and choose Google Docs.
- The first time, sign in with your Google account and allow access.
- The conversation is created as a Google Doc in your Google Drive, ready to edit or share.
The extension asks only for Google's drive.file permission, which covers the files it creates for you and files you choose to open with it, not the rest of your Drive.
Save exports straight to Google Drive
If you'd rather keep a file than a Google Doc, the extension can also save your PDF, Word or Markdown export directly to Google Drive, and it can import PDFs, images, Google Docs and Google Sheets from Drive. Need a PDF instead? See how to save a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF.
Private by design
To create your file, the conversation is sent to our servers over HTTPS. It is used only for the conversion and deleted as soon as your file is ready. We never store, log or review your conversations. Google Docs exports are saved to your own Google Drive.
Free and paid plans
Installing the extension gives you 3 free downloads straight away, then 3 free downloads every day. For unlimited PDF, Word, Markdown and Google Docs exports, direct export to Google Drive and no branding, choose the Starter plan ($5 a month) or Pro plan ($36 a year).
We also make extensions that export Claude and Gemini conversations and turn YouTube transcripts into PDFs, plus apps for Android and Windows, such as AI Chat Exporter for saving shared AI chats on your phone.
Frequently asked questions
Do code blocks and tables survive the export?

Does it work with languages other than English?
Yes. It works with every language ChatGPT supports and keeps the characters and formatting of your conversation intact.
